What's on my Kitchen Counter

Fresh, unwashed, cage free, homegrown eggs
Thank you to my friend Rebecca for raising chickens and selling her eggs. These are the best eggs I've ever had. And I now understand why recipes call for room temperature eggs. It makes a big difference in baked goods.

Trying to Capture What My Eyes See

My inexpensive, little digital camera is not adequate to capturing what even my half-blind eyes can see! The morning sun shining through the maple trees golden leaves is breathtaking in real life.

After taking these pictures I turned around and there was a gorgeous moon! My camera couldn't even pick up the image. Oh well, I take pictures with my mind and store them in my memory.

What beauties are you seeing today?

My Little Flower Garden

I'm not a gardener in the classic sense of the word. I don't have a fully landscaped yard with "outdoor rooms" and a changing with the seasons display of lovely plants. What I do have is large trees, a few shrubs, plenty of lawn and one small flower garden. Below is what it looked like just after Mr. Movie built the timbered box for it.

I finally figured out what those green things at the back were. I had hoped for Daffodils, but they turned out to be Naked Ladies, which sprouted, bloomed and faded while I was on vacation this year! I was so surprised to seem them when I got home. They looked pretty and were a pleasant mid-summer treat.

The flowers waxed and waned with the weather. We had lots of rain, then some really hot weather, then it cooled off and things came back to life. I neglected to get photos when it looked the best, but here are some before everything is gone with the frost.

The Zinnias were aggressive growers!

Lobelia on the right, and a resurgence of Pansies

The light frost this week took out the Zinnias

Extra pretty blue Pansies

These Snapdragons were volunteers from last year's plantings

Love that rich color!

Can't remember the name of these, but this unusual flower is a delightful mutant!

White Verbena

White Alyssum - it's fragrance is powerful!

Another color variation of the "can't remember its name" flowers

Sweet William - transplanted from next door and thriving

Geraniums - perennials where I grew up, annuals here!

My grandmother had specimens like these and called them Martha Washington geraniums. I love the pretty pink!
Nothing award winning here, but I sure love the bright spot of color at the front of my house.

Rozy's Pretties

Now that my daughter-in-law to be has received her birthday/bridal shower gifts I thought I'd share them with you.

First up are two hanging towels with matching knit dishcloths:

Our son's birthday (I'm going to rename him Mr. Aviation) is in January, hence the snowman, and he uses bandannas as handkerchiefs, hence the top fabric, which I found at a fabric store and couldn't resist!

Mr. Aviation, our oldest son, spent the summer in Alaska, so when I saw this linen towel at the thrift store I knew it would make a special keepsake for his sweet fiance. (I've got to come up with a name for her.)

And the other dish towel just appealed to me for its pretty colors and sentiment.

I make a label for Rozy's Pretties to put in with the gifts identifying their fabric content and washing instructions, as well as any interesting tidbits about the fabrics.

What do you like to make for bridal shower gifts?

Bringing the Outside In

I do believe it's Autumn.

Just wanted to share a pretty leaf I found outside on the lawn.

Tuesday's Thrifty Treasures

First let me say that I have an ongoing list of things I want and look for when I go thrifting. (Or "poppin' tags" as my boys call it.) I don't always find what's on my list, but I do find treasures.

Forty-two (42) balls of crochet cotton in various colors for $8.50 - That's just $0.20 per ball!
I have some projects in mind for Christmas and other future presents so this will get me started.
A delightful wordless picture book of The Lion and The Mouse by Jerry Pinkney . . .

Can't beat a Caldecott medal winner for $0.75

Fleece pillow case for $0.50; vintage buttons $0.50; Corning French White dish $0.50

Two Revereware pans with lids $7.00 for both.
All those goodies for $17.75! What treasures have you found lately?

Food for the Season

Here's a yummy dish that fits right in with the colors of October;

Sweet Potato Stew with Orange Juice and Black Beans

Serve over Brown Rice . . .

And you have a delicious orange and black Autumnal meal!

Sweet Potato Stew With Orange Juice and Black Beans

1 large sweet potato. Peel and cut into bite-sized chunks, put in a covered microwavable dish with enough water to cover the bottom of the dish. Microwave for 8-10 minutes, until just tender, but still hold their shape.

While potatoes are cooking:
Chop 1 medium onion; in a large pot sauté onion in 3 tablespoons olive oil; when tender and golden sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour over the onions and stir to make a roux, cook for about 2 minutes. Add 1 cup orange juice, 1 tablespoon chili powder and 1 tablespoon honey, stir until thick and smooth.

Drain the potatoes and one 15 oz. can of black beans, then add the sweet potatoes and beans to the onion/juice mixture. Stir and cook until heated through.

Serve with brown rice and ENJOY!

Bonus:
Peter Rabbit came to visit my yard this morning! (The white containers are my bird baths.)
Sorry for the poor photography--the sun was shining in the dirty windows and I have a cheap camera.
